Ping newcomers on wikis that have a participation group to get their feedback
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

We are clearly missing feedback from every type of users. We don't get any feedback from newcomers. This task is to target some newcomers on the wikis that have a consultation.

The target is users who have more than 10 edits and less than 50 and already have made an edit on talk: or user talk:.

I'm going to send a translated message to those users on wikis that use the following languages: Arabic, Catalan, Dutch, English, French, German, Hungarian, Norwegian, Spanish, Polish, Thai.

Japanese, Russian and Hindi have a consultation in the middle of a page, which makes things less easier to edit.

Wikidata and Commons are special cases : most beginners there are experienced elsewhere.

The message is drafted here: https://www.mediawiki.org/w/index.php?title=Talk_pages_consultation_2019/Communication/Reaching_at_newcomers

Event Timeline

Trizek-WMF created this task.

The message has been copyedited and sent to translators by @Whatamidoing-WMF.
I'm now going to post the messages to the newcomers on some wikis.

I've queried recent changes for "Learners" on talk pages. I had a limit to 500 edits within the last 30 days. Sometimes the query only gave too few results. I've capped the query to 100 newcomers to avoid flooding.

The message has been sent to:

  • fr.wp (100 newcomers)
  • ja.wp (100 newcomers) - with a title in English due to a bad copy-pasting
  • ar.wp (78 newcomers)
  • no.wp (21 newcomers)

To be continued with other languages.

@Trizek-WMF

  • Is the target audience still "users who have more than 10 edits and less than 50" Or is the target now users who have made less than 500 edits in the last 30 days?
  • Is the limit going to be capped at 100 newcomers per site?
  • Does it still target users who have made an edit on talk: or usertalk:?

users who have more than 10 edits and less than 500 and who posted on a talk page (whatever the technology used there)

  • Is the limit going to be capped at 100 newcomers per site?

I've sent messages to every languages I had. Since the due date for feedback in on April 8th, pinging more people wouldn't help the wrapping up. So I consider this task as done.

Overall, it has been a success: when people are directly invited, they take action (example). It proves that we don't have any proper tool to have people spontaneously participating to discussions.
