Currently when you tap into search in Minerva there is a white overlay that appears on-top of the screen.

We should improve this step of the experience. Perhaps there are two different approaches here:

Yes.
@alexhollender we should do yes. We wouldn't show the results until typing occurs, however if we refocus search, given we see past search results we would see the overlay - this is how it behaves on Vector anyhow. I've added these notes explicitly to T282473 lest we forget
