Community relations support for advanced mobile contributions, Q4
Open, HighPublic

Description

What is the problem?
The Readers web team wants to provide workflows on the mobile website that are currently hidden from editors. We would need to work closely with our communities throughout this process.

How does success of this task look like? How do we know when we are done?
Partnered discussions with community on the following:

  • Updates and rollouts
  • Feedback for changes to current functionality/future functionality
  • Help with testing with community members
  • Help with presenting the work to the community

Is there any goal, program, project, team related with this request?
Output 3.1 of the annual plan: Contribution tools on mobile web via an existing mediawiki skin

What is your expected timeline from start to end? Is there a hard deadline?
The deadline for the project is Q1 of the 2019-2020 fiscal year

CKoerner_WMF triaged this task as Normal priority.Apr 9 2019, 8:36 PM

The Readers Web team recently had an offsite. One discussion was the next steps for AMC. Here is a rough outline of next steps

After the overlow menu is deployed we will reach out to the current three wikis (Arabic, Indonesian, Spanish)

We will highlight the progressso far:

  • talk tab at the top of the page. More special pages options.....
  • include images of opt-in process and perhaps a link to where to change setting
  • So far, the opt-out rate has been really low - meaning the people that have tried it so far, like it.
  • Some encouraging language to try it out in thier work and give feedback. Please tell your friends!
  • Project page for updates

After that we want to add new wikis to this group with a similar announcement of the feature.

  • Next list (to possibly change): persian, japanese, thai, italian

Drafts are ready for the next steps.

We're going to run a small banner for logged-in mobile users on the first three wikis to start with a light approach.

We'll also send a message to the communities.

VP and Ambassador/chapter message:

I posted the message to the seven wiki village pumps (Arabic, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Persian, Spanish, Thai).

Working on getting the banner translated as that's more important to be in the local language.*

*Given an infinite timescale _everything_ would be translated. :/

CKoerner_WMF raised the priority of this task from Normal to High.Jul 16 2019, 2:28 PM

I think that means the next announcement will be letting all wikis know this opt-in feature is coming. @ovasileva and I are targeting early August for that outreach.

The feature is now available on all Wikipedias. The project page has been updated with a summary.

https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Reading/Web/Advanced_mobile_contributions#Project_Summary

A request has been sent to translators for help with translating that summary and a short message.
