Description

Spinning off from T207674: Thank You email: revise how we specify local currency, can we review how and where TY emails confirm donation specifics? CNTCT-13297460 donated 4/8/19 and their TY email specified:

Subject line: Re: Your $ 3.00 gift = free knowledge for billions
First sentence of email: I love that it’s my job to thank you for your $ 3.00 monthly contribution...
Donation summary at bottom: Your donation, number CNTCT-13297460, on 2019-04-08 was $ 3.00.

What would be helpful for Donor Services is if the Summary at bottom could contain a mention of the specific currency in which they donated. 3-digit currency codes would be great, but if the dynamic content is funky I'm open to suggestions. The ideal would be for donors to be able to know that '$' means MXN if they donated in MXN, and not need to contact us to confirm their currency.

Can we confirm whether amount & currency will no longer be in the Subject Lines? I wasn't clear from the end of T207674 what the new default is.

@CCogdill_WMF any thoughts?

One other possible approach mentioned in the fr-tech/DS meeting yesterday would be forgoing the use of currency symbols entirely, in favor of the three-digit ISO codes. This may be easier to implement. @CCogdill_WMF what would you think of that?

I think if it's easier to build, but still confirms the currency to all donors , that's a good possibility.

You mean removing the symbol from the first sentence? Is that to reduce
donor confusion? I'd prefer not to change that part unless you think we
should for clarity.

The sense I got was that inserting the symbol is part of what makes the back end more complicated; @Ejegg is that a fair summary?

As it is now, do we use the symbol in the first sentence only when it's a '$' currency?

The back end has a function that takes currency code, amount, and locale, and formats them according to the customary display of that currency in that locale, with an appropriate symbol, symbol placement, and decimal points.

Letter templates can either use that function or the raw 3 letter code and amount in any place.

That function has a lookup table of currencies to their symbols. On March 19th, we updated that table so that all of the $ symbols besides USD now have clarifying letters, e.g. AUD is now A$ and MXN is now MXN$. So only USD donors will still get a bare $ in their thank you letters.
