Upload* log entries show up on the contributions page but are not factored into whether or not the contribs link should be red - only if the user has made edits. This can be misleading if the user shows up in RecentChanges or elsewhere with a red contribs link.

*I assume other log entries that show on contribs will exhibit the same result; however, uploading a file is probably the only thing vanilla MediaWiki might allow a new user with no edits to do that would generate a log entry but not an edit.
