pull decom hardware and ship to Harry/OIT @ SF office
Closed, ResolvedPublic0 Estimated Story Points

Description

@Papaul,

@HMarcus is OIT's system adminstrator within the SF office. As such, he'll be maintaining the servers at the office. We recently moved some ulsfo decommission servers to them, but they need more memory + hardware raid controllers.

I've requested (and been granted) approval from @faidon and @wiki_willy to have you pull hardware from decommissioned R720xds and send them over to OIT.

We need 8 controllers from the following batch of R720xd in your decommission/unracked server pile:

2FLKYV1 ms-be2001
2FMKYV1 ms-be2002
2FMMYV1 ms-be2003
2FNLYV1 ms-be2004
2FLMYV1 ms-be2005
CGF8XV1 ms-be2006
2FLGYV1 ms-be2007
2FKMYV1 ms-be2008
2FKLYV1 ms-be2009
2FMLYV1 ms-be2010
2FNKYV1 ms-be2011
2FLLYV1 ms-be2012

I've listed all of the possibilities, rather than just 8, in an effort to make it easier for you to pull the hardware. (Hopefully all of these aren't on the bottom of a pile of servers.) We only need 8 H730P raid controllers from the R720xd systsems, since the systems in the office are R620s (same generation) so the controllers can swap into them.

Please also just pull the memory in the 8 systems you pull the hardware controllers out of, and send it over with them. OIT can then use that to upgrade the 8 systems they install the controllers into & ship these to the main office attention to Harry.

Please note on the decommission gsheet that these 8 hosts have had that hardware pulled. Let me know if there are any questions!

Hi all,

While in the process of swapping out our old equipment with new DC hardware, I noticed there are several spare SSDs with you guys as well. Is there any chance we can tack on 6-8 Intel 300gb SSD drives? Possibly from those same servers you're pulling the other equipment out of, if that's easier.

Also, any spare mounting screws\ square hole brackets (like these: https://www.amazon.com/100-Pack-Mounting-Screws-Square/dp/B00XKLSGSE/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=square+hole+server+rack&qid=1556824243&s=electronics&sr=1-4)

Let me know if there's anything you can do, it would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,
Harry

Hi all,

Any update with this? We are looking to get some projects moving over here with this equipment.

Thanks,

Hi all,

The controllers and RAM arrived today. Thanks very much for your help with coordinating this, I'll let you know if we need anything else but this ticket can be closed.

Thanks again!

Harry

Hi all,

Apologies, but the work for this is not quite finished. After installing the cards, we realized that the current SAS connector cable is not the correct size to connect to the new controller. The below figure is what the setup currently looks like:

Labeled "3" is the software controller termination. With the new storage controller, the termination is supposed to look like the below:

However, the terminating end is not the correct size. The below picture describes exactly the issue that we're running into:

They should be thicker on the end, like below:

Is there any chance you can pull the SAS backplane cables from the aforementioned servers and ship those over to us as well? Apologies if this was too much information, as I'm sure you guys are well versed on what all of this looks like, but I just wanted to be as descriptive as possible.

Thanks so much!
Harry
