Google still shows old logo for Wikimedia Foundation
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Searching Google for "Wikimedia Foundation" (or various related terms like "Wikimedia", "Wikimedia endowment") still shows the old colorful logo in the Knowledge Graph results.

The new logo is used on both en.wikipedia and Wikidata so I'm not sure how Google is pulling the wrong one. @Dzahn suggested this might be something which can be fixed through the Google Search Console.

Event Timeline

@Pcoombe @Dzahn - would love to get this fixed - but not sure how. I do not see a spot to set it in Search Console - and in there it shows the correct image. But if you have more info on how to do that - please let me know. I believe others have access to the Search Console for the Foundation site as well.

I have previously used the feedback option on Google to request logo update, and it is something we have casually mentioned to them as well. Is anyone aware of other things we should try?

I have submitted an additional request via their submit feedback tool. Will post here if I hear back.

For "Wikimedia", the original colored Wikimedia logo would be correct, IIRC.

FYI, I also used the "Feedback" button on the Google search results page to write "The logo is outdated. See https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T222467 for more information" on 2019-08-25, but nothing has changed yet. Do WMF-Communications have other, more successful ways to contact Google?

Has anyone signed in and submitted feedback as a representitive of the WMF?

They might listen to that more.

For me, searching "Wikimedia Foundation" or "Wikimedia" now shows no logo at all in the infobox. I guess technically that fixes this bug, although it would be better to have the current logo!

Same here

Huh, I reported this to them on a whim to see if they'd replace it. Maybe they saw my report and just removed it. Technically fixes the concern...

We could/should just claim the panel, I imagine OIT would need to do that?

I have reported it via various Google dashboard systems connected to Foundation accounts (such as Search Console, etc.) since the logo was changed. In total, I have probably reported it to them in various places about a dozen times. I suspect we could ask the Partnerships team within Advancement to talk to our official contacts, but I admit being a little surprised their official methods do not work faster and that it has lingered this long.

Seems like a reasonable plan. I think this particular task is probably now resolved.

I have pinged someone in Partnerships. :)

Hi all - confirming this issue is on the agenda for Strategic Partnerships' next meeting with Google on 3/17 - I'll keep you all posted on what I learn.

Seems the logo is back. :(

@Nicholas_Perry, would be really interested to know what comes out of that meeting. :)

Hey everyone - thanks for your patience while I got some clarity from Google! The latest update from them is that the old logo has been successfully removed so currently no logo is being populated. Replacing it with the new one is something that is done algorithmically opposed to manually on their end. They're expecting this to happen within the next few days, so it's a half-win for now until that happens but we should be in the clear here as far as our old logo showing up goes.

@Nicholas_Perry - that is fantastic - thank you for that update! :)

The next mystery is how the affiliates logo got associated with the "Wikimedia movement" search results...

Interesting - looks like it's being pulled in from Commons (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikimedia_movement_affiliates.svg)

Does this need to be flagged for them as well?

Removing task assignee due to inactivity, as this open task has been assigned for more than two years (see emails sent to assignee on May26 and Jun17, and T270544). Please assign this task to yourself again if you still realistically [plan to] work on this task - it would be very welcome!

(See https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Bug_management/Assignee_cleanup for tips how to best manage your individual work in Phabricator.)

Pcoombe claimed this task.

I checked again, and the Wikimedia Foundation knowledge panel now shows the correct logo.
