Setup Phabricator tag for all Wikidata Documentation tasks

@Mrjohncummings and I have been working on identify all of the missing or under-developed parts of the Wikidata documentation so that we can create a global tasks list that everyone can contribute to.

We need to create a Phabricator tag so that we can list our findings in a central, publicly visible work-space that any community member can join in with. The new tag would be completely ongoing, as there will always be improvements and changes needed as Wikidata evolves.

At present, many different volunteers work on small sections of the documentation independently. This is leading to lots of repetition of work, and a lack of clarity about what needs to be complete as nobody can see the whole picture.

Missing or unclear documentation is currently having a major impact on:

  • Acquiring new editors
  • Forming partnerships with GLAMs and other data partner organisations
  • Adoption by other sister projects (primarily English Wikipedia)

Hopefully the need for better documentation (and a tag to organise it) is obvious, but we can provide links to on-wiki discussions and RFCs if more background is needed.

This already exists by searching for open tasks which are both in Documentation and Wikidata?
Of course this won't work if you really want to have a dedicated workboard, so this depends on which workboard columns you have in mind.

Thanks for that suggestion @Aklapper - The dedicated workboard is actually quite critical for us to organise it properly. The columns I had in mind were:

  • Tours (new tours or improvements to existing)
  • New user (instructions for new users)
  • Advanced user (using mass editing tools, APIs, libraries etc)
  • Data import (how to import data into Wikidata)
  • Outreach (docs intended to help external organisations use/contribute to Wikidata)

There are other breakdowns we could use, I was hoping to get a few more community members involved to finalise the structure.

I must say I'm not convinced here, as the columns do not seem to be very disjunct.
Plus has already about 150 tasks...

Are there any discussions on wiki or mailing lists etc where further people request using Phabricator and a workboard to organize Wikidata related documentation work?

Note that you can also filter the Wikidata workboard to show only tasks which also have the Documentation tag, via the "Custom Filter" search view in the upper left corner:

Hi @Aklapper, apologies for the delay getting back.

I completely see what you mean, I think for now we should just start working through the improvements using filtered views for tracking. On reflection I don't think we need categorisation as much as I initially thought.

In any case I now see that it's not using the boards with the usual convention for Phabricator.

Thanks for the reply! I'm boldly declining this task for now, but please set the status of this report back to "Open" via the Add Action...Change Status dropdown if there are reasons to have a separate tag. Thanks :)
