Change "Media" to "Images and media" in the visual editor toolbar
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Based on:

  • most requested questions on help desks, in Growth team findings
  • my personal experience interacting with newcomers as a volunteer

At the moment, when people want to add a photo to a page, they click Insert and then search for a way to insert a photo. Media is a too generic term, than can have multiple meanings in several languages (press...).

Have a clear label that matches what people are looking for would certainly help newcomers to achieve their goals, or, at least, facilitate it.

Event Timeline

I can see how video/audio are rare and can be grouped as "and media", but what about other images (diagrams/screenshots).

Should we use "Images and media" or are photos so much more common?

Good question, @Esanders. It would be interesting to hear from @Urbanecm and @revi: when newcomers are asking about how to add photos in Czech and Korean Wikipedias, what word are they using? Is it the word for "images" or the word for "photos" or something else?

Hi @MMiller_WMF, newcomers ask how to add a photo/image. Never heard a newcomer even to ask how to add a video/sound, and they certainly don't use the word media. Maybe we can split the buttons to "add photo" and "add video"? They can lead to the same interface, just filtered to correct datatypes.

Hello, I want to work on this issue. How can I proceed?

@SomtochiAma it sounds like there is still not agreement over the best language to use, but maybe you could submit a patch with "Images and media" per T223775#5201271. I would look for "Media" in en.json in the VisualEditor extension and submit a patch to change it. You can refer to https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/How_to_become_a_MediaWiki_hacker for instructions on how to get started.

@iamjessklein @ppelberg Do you have any objections or other thoughts about the proposed change – replacing "Media" with "Photos and media" in the toolbar?

On the topic of changing "Media" to something contributors seeking to insert a photo/image are more likely to expect/understand...that makes a good deal of sense. Let's do that.

As for the particular language we use, I default to Jess. @iamjessklein, what language do you think should be used in place of "Media"? cc @Volker_E @Amire80

My instinct: "Images" or "Images and media" seems right considering that seems to be the pattern among other services.

Longer term, I wonder if it makes sense to add a secondary menu to more clearly expose "Upload" and "Search Commons" [as is done in G Docs/Slides] vs. having those options more deeply located inside the dialog.

I also never liked the "Media" label very much!

I'm fine with whatever Real Designers say, but my own intuition tells me that "Images and media" is probably OK.

Yes, it is better.

@ppelberg @iamjessklein -- for what it's worth, this is the phrasing we're currently using in the welcome survey as one of the response options to "Why did you create your account today?": "To add a photo or image to an existing Wikipedia article."

I think the clearest word to make sure is present is "photo", because that's what we think the majority of images are (that newcomers are trying to upload). But I do not think having only "images" would be a big problem -- I think most users will know that photos are a subset of images.

The majority of medias we have are images. But Commons community would disagree if we just reduce this menu entry to just "Images".

So we go for "Images and media"?

Just be careful to have the string available for translation a couple of weeks before its deployment on the interface.

+1 for "Images and media"

This is a change to existing string, so we don't need to worry about that. Out of date translations will just continue to say "Media" in the local language until fixed.

Can we also change the label of the corresponding button in WikiEditor to the same label? The current label "Embedded file" is a bit too technical. If they do the same thing, they should have the same label.

+1 to "images and media" - the language is a bit more humane

We have a consensus for "images and media". Go! :)

Excellent, so you can merge patch?

This is helpful context. Thank you, @MMiller_WMF. Considering we're going with "Images and media" for now, does it then make sense to update the Welcome Survey to reflect this language (assuming it's still running)?

Agreed.

@Amire80, are you referring to the tooltip that appears on hover (see below)? If so, I do agree that "Insert images and media" [1] is more clear and something we should do, provided @Trizek-WMF & @Whatamidoing-WMF don't see any issues with doing so.

Yep – let's merge the change that applies to VE; we'll wait to hear about WTE. cc @matmarex
