User research (T207831) showed some occasional confusion when users start a new translation and the selected language is not the one they expected. The issue does not seem frequent or severe since users are able to recover and select the right language, but adding some extra clarity can help to reduce the initial confusion.

This ticket proposes to adjust the placeholder on the new translation dialog to include the selected language. This will help users to identify the current language more easily, and make it clear this is the "from" language.
The proposed placeholder text is:

Search for a page to translate from <language-name>
