Homepage: add link back to Homepage to Special:ConfirmEmail
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

As part of the work on the Newcomer homepage, we added a call-to-action in the start module to get a new link to confirm the user email address.

The link redirects the user to the Special:ConfirmEmail page, where the user is left with no hints to go back to the Homepage, have the user sent a new link or not.
This scenario is disorienting for the user even more on mobile where finding the way back to the homepage requires more steps than on desktop.

To solve this issue we might:

  • add a link to the homepage on Special:ConfirmEmail if we know that the user is coming from the homepage
  • show discovery aid tools to redirect the user to the homepage

Event Timeline

hi @Cntlsn - Let's leave showing other aid to discovery tools and go with the one addition of a button to go back to the newcomer homepage. Not an urgent task though.

I'm moving to Triaged but Future until there's a specification about what to do. FWIW, my two cents is to decline this task – if the page is instructing the user to confirm their email, we should try to not interrupt that flow by providing a call to action to have them do something else (i.e. go to Homepage, forget about that email verification link in their inbox). Also, after they verify their email they'll be automatically routed back to Special:Homepage.

Declining per @kostajh's comment that users who verify their email will be automatically taken back to their homepage, let's not make it too distracting with addition of another button. (Also, those who choose _not_ to confirm their email after landing here from the homepage can also tap 'back' in their mobile browser)
