Warn the user to start Wikidata descriptions with lowercase letter in SE
Open, HighPublic

Description

Please make it clear for the users that title descriptions should begin with a lowercase letter and should not end in periods/full stops except some cases. I constantly find good descriptions but most of the times, they do not start with a lowercase letter so I have to fix them. Please create a warning and link Help:Description. We would need it as soon as it is possible to avoid (un)correct descriptions.

JMinor moved this task from Needs Triage to Administrative on the Wikipedia-iOS-App-Backlog board.

Some of the issue here is that most Android keyboards will capitalise the beginning of sentences by default, and there is not much we can do at an app level to reverse that behaviour. (It would be different for each manufacturer, etc.) That doesn't prevent our improving the instructional text we give on screen, however, so that is a likely first step.

We could theoretically replace capitals and strip ending punctuation server-side, but this is not a guaranteed fix, as some descriptions really should start with a capital letter (if they begin with a proper noun in English, for example), and these will be made incorrect by such automatic interventions. So a bit more thought is needed there.

@schoenbaechler For our next minor release, can we please add a line of text to the SE text entry screen for Wikidata descriptions mentioning that descriptions should generally start with a lowercase letter, and linking to the help page @Bencemac references?

Thanks @Bencemac & @Roy17 for the valuable feedback. I suggest to go with Google Material Design’s foreseen element to help improve the current situation, which is an assistive element in the form of Helper text:

Add article descriptionsTranslate article descriptions
Design specs on ZeplinDesign specs on Zeplin

As the current implementation features an info icon that lets people access the info/help page about descriptions fairly quickly, I wouldn’t recommend to add an additional help link below the text input. The Suggested edits help page also contains the link to the Wikidata help page that @Bencemac mentioned.

As far as the copy of the helper text goes, I suggest to go with a clear statement:

begin with a lowercase letter

Looking forward to get your feedback about the design & copy suggestion @Charlotte @Bencemac @Roy17.

Thanks!

I might say "usually begin with a lowercase letter" - because in the example you show, it is correct to start with an uppercase character. Alas, the ambiguity is the whole reason we need the helper text, and can't just make an automagical solution.

I think the usually version is fine. Thank you!

Ok, updated the screens and moving this to “Ready for dev”:

Just tried it out in 2.7.50285-alpha-2019-07-26, looks good @cooltey, moving it to QA signoff! 👏

I am seeing the warning message on 2.7.50286-r-2019-07-30

But I am also seeing a problem where the first letter of the description is capitalized on the preview screen even when it is not capitalized on the entry screen (see below). I'm not sure if that's our app or an android thing. So far it is happening on both Pixel and Samsung devices. I'm not sure if we should track that separately or maybe there isn't much we can do?

Lowercase here

Upper case on the next screen

Known issue, because we decided in the past to capitalise them when they're shown in the app, and the preview screen is showing them as the app will display them - i.e., uppercased. Yes, it looks strange given that we've told people to be suuuuuuuuuper sure they begin with a lowercase letter where necessary.

So we need to have a team discussion about what we do with the logic on these preview screens, but this shouldn't hold up release, and we can handle in another ticket.
