Homepage: confusing sequence in Contributions page
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

Imagine the following journey:

  1. Open mobile homepage
  2. Click Impact module
  3. Click x edits to other kinds of pages (see all)
  4. You're on Special:Contributions, had a look over your contribs and now you want to get back to your homepage. At desktop, this is quite easy (click your username in top right). However, on mobile, it's possible that users will try to click at their username on the top of the contribs page (the most prominent username displayed), with something like "I clicked my username to get to homepage, this is my username, so it'll get me back where I was".

I think this can be quite confusing for some of the newbies.

thanks for flagging this @Urbanecm

I'm not sure it's a big problem since the user page will then show "Homepage" as one of the top navigation tabs.

Perhaps we could analyze the EditorJourney data to see if this is a problem among first 24 hour editors.

The alternative seems to be to modify the target for the link to go to Special:Homepage.

@MMiller_WMF I think you should make a judgment about what to do here.

Thanks for filing, @Urbanecm. I'm going to put this in our design backlog for @RHo and @Cntlsn to think about if they have spare time, but we won't be able to prioritize thinking hard about this.

I agree with @kostajh's suggestion to change the link target if we see this is a problem with users using the EditorJourney data, but that it is unlikely to be a major issues since "Homepage" will be shown as a tab menu item.

Suggest we pop it as medium priority to revisit later in Q1.
