Description

I can't see this documented anywhere as planned or anything indicating anyone is aware but wikimediafoundation.org shows:

We are taking a time out.
The Wikimedia Foundation website is temporarily offline for maintenance and will return shortly. Our free knowledge projects remain online and unaffected.

RhinosF1 triaged this task as Unbreak Now! priority.Jul 7 2019, 8:58 AM

Site is down - if this isn't planned then it should probably be UBN!

This was indeed planned. It will return once VIP approves some changes that will include disabling maintenance mode.

RhinosF1 lowered the priority of this task from Unbreak Now! to Needs Triage.Jul 7 2019, 9:02 AM

@Varnent: Was this tracked anywhere?

I can't remember seeing anything on wikitech-l and deployments doesn't show anything nor a phab task.??

Surprised you're working on Sunday! Keep it up.

Note: reverting UBN as it's planned

It is hosted externally (so timing tends to be more fluid) and managed by a small internal team - so documentation is handled differently. These are also incredibly rare (first time in 5+ years), so generally not much fanfare.

Working now as this is generally low traffic time for that site. :)

Ah, Probably offtopic for this ticket but communication is a good thing. You say 'handled differently' but does that mean not publicly? Or is there a better place to look and file problems?

I'll leave this to someone else but this task should be closed or something.

Varnent claimed this task.

To be honest, it has never occurred before, and is only being done for a few hours in low traffic time - so I do not really think we felt much public communication was necessary. In the past, when this site has gone down, it was a fairly internal ordeal and no public questions. It is similar to how we handle other strictly Foundation managed sites. Not out of any effort to keep things secret, I think more out of a desire not to bother people with seem like relatively minor (and in this case incredibly rare) incidents which do not interrupt any workflows for community members.

That said, certainly open to more public communication in the future. But as this is the first time in the site's lifetime, not sure when that will be applied.

Great - thank you!

Site is back online.

Noting for the record per pm with @Varnent that next time idea of a phab task to show information will be noted.

@Varnent - maybe tag / subscribe those who need to know that so we have a public record

So I know - who on Phabricator needs to know and should be tagged?

@Varnent - Probably members of your team / teams that may organise downtime in future

They were already notified and do not utilize Phabricator to track things like that. Are there others that should be tagged?

Okay - if anyone is aware of teams that should be alerted and were not - please let me know and I can tag them here in the future. Thanks! :)

@Varnent: If your team owns the website wikimediafoundation.org and does not use the Phabricator project tag wikimediafoundation.org to track / manage / plan things related to wikimediafoundation.org, then what is the purpose of the Phabricator project tag wikimediafoundation.org?

I did not say it is not used for anything, nor did I say my team was the only one notified. I said that this particular area was not managed on Phabricator (as it requires coordination with an external hosting partner who does not use Phabricator) and that the teams which expressed a desire to be notified, had indeed been notified. I cannot speak for those department's usage of Phabricator, but none requested that I do so here.

Also, are you suggesting that we consider removing that project tag? My sense has been something along those lines (which I am not suggesting nor previously considered) would be rather upsetting to people. But I trust your judgement on Phabricator and if you would like, I can give it some thought.
