[betacluster] Cannot confirm email address - confirmation never received
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

In beta cluster confirmation is never received when

  • a new user is created and enters email address on Special:CreateAccount form
  • a user changes an email address

A new email address is successfully added in db - e.g ET198.

The email address (not wikimedia based) that was used in the above cases is the same address to which emails are presently successfully delivered (for users who have been confirmed their address previously, e.g. ET4).

Emails are sent without any problems for all kinds of notifications for confirmed email addresses.

Event Timeline

Thanks for filing this, @Etonkovidova. I just want to note that this is blocking our ability to release T222848 (help users discover homepage after email confirmation), because we can't test email confirmation in beta.

greg renamed this task from [betalabs] Cannot confirm email address - confirmation never received to [betacluster] Cannot confirm email address - confirmation never received.Jul 11 2019, 4:51 AM
greg moved this task from To Triage to Backlog on the Beta-Cluster-Infrastructure board.
greg updated the task description. (Show Details)

@greg sure, I'm back today from being out of the office last week, and will try to reproduce this and trace the emails to see whats happening.

If there is any additional info about affected email addresses, etc. that may be helpful too.

I'm not having luck reproducing this with my own non-wikimedia.org personal email account.

@Etonkovidova is the issue still reproducible for you? If so, could you please share the affected email address(es)? If you prefer to send the email address(es) privately please use my wikimedia email address <kherron@wikimedia.org>

Etonkovidova claimed this task.

@herron I use two email addresses when testing email creating/confirmation/updating. Both of them were failing to display confirmation links, although all emails to such addresses (from users who previously set their email) was fine.

But, interestingly, after reading your comment above, I decided to use for confirmation a new email address that I never used before - and all was working! I wonder, just out of curiosity, if there is a limits of some sort on how many users may use the same email address (cause I have quite many test users in beta)? I sent you the email addresses that I used in the past, just in case if there is some limiting logic in place. But the issue us Resolved (sorry that I haven't figured to try the third email address before).
