iNaturalist meet-up and nature safari at Wikimania Stockholm
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

iNaturalist is a citizen science project focused on biodiversity. It has a large community of enthusiasts, of which some are also active in the various Wikimedia communities.

On Sunday at 9:30am during Wikimania I will be hosting an iNaturalist meet-up in front of the event venue, Aula Magna. Once we are all assembled, we will head over to the nearby Stora Skuggan nature preserve (approximately 1 mile / 1.5 km from the event venue) where we can look for plants and animals to photograph and have discussions about how to further collaboration between iNaturalist and the Wikimedia projects. We should return before lunch time.

Question: This seems to be a worldwide initiative. In many countries there are similar or at least resembling initiatives at national level, for example in Finland https://laji.fi/en - I don't know if there are similar national projects in Sweden but I could guess that there could be.

So, what is the division of tasks between this kind of worldwide initiatives and the maybe paralllel national initiatives?

And what should be the relationship between wikimedia and the worldwide initiatives on the one hand and the national initiatives on the other hand?

If I should choose to send my observations from my country of residence to a worldwide platform or to a national platform I guess that I would choose the national platform. - And that is also what I have been doing as a citizen naturalist". - Only that I have not chosen to do this because I hear about iNaturalist only now.

But now as I know of tyhe existence of iNaturalist, what choises should you recommend for me and other citicen naturalists between these two?

The same fungus seems to appear with three names. In the walk in friday I managed to save two pictures, but when I tried the same sunday, i did not manage somehow. I don't kno if it was depending on whether or not the system might have regocnized the finnish taxon names that I wrote on friday but did not recognize the taxon names that I wrote in fiinnish on sunday morning (at my own walk near Juristernas hus) or did I only manage not to push the right button in the menu.

Anyway, the application seems to be very interesting and maybe the definitions that one gets for taxons there are better than in an average facebook group. (At least one finnish biologist with whom I have been co-.operating in some common project, had seen my first photo that I managed to upload and confirmed my suggestion for the taxon name).
