Description

As a follow up to T220145: Homepage Mentorship: allow mentors to configure their presentation, I think it would be beneficial to allow mentors to specify an image that can be used alongside their username (and custom text, if set) in Special:Homepage

Ignoring the fact that I'm not a designer and that I'm mentoring myself here, it would look something like this:

The formatting in the mentors list would be something like:

[[User:KHarlan_(WMF)]]|Some custom text|Image name
# User without custom text, but with image
[[User:KHarlan_(WMF)]]||Image name
# User with custom text, but without image
[[User:KHarlan_(WMF)]]|Some custom text

It would also be nice to load the image into the mentorship help module after you've clicked "ask a question", as a way to make the process friendlier and more welcoming to new users.

Would it be easy/desirable for a mentor to add a picture?

A couple notes:

Whenever it's possible for people to upload images, there is always concern that people could upload offensive or scary images. The concern would be less here, because the mentor sign-up pages are protected pages that only experienced users can edit.
A precedent for this is the way that English Wikipedia has a listing of hosts: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Teahouse/Hosts. They can add photos of themselves, or just photos that symbolize themselves.

One thing we might look at to see if this kind of work is worthwhile is whether mentors with introductory messages seem to get more questions than mentors without introductory messages. Sort of a natural experiment.
