Using CommunityTech to report about new versions of files
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

CommunityTech is reporting about files that get notification for deletion. It is also imprtant to get noticication about reupload of new versions of files in the article. New versions of maps for example might be problematic, vandalism and also files used image map uploading new versions make the image map useless.
Uploading new version is like adding new file to article without notification to the article contributors. The notification is necessary. I know that the CommunityTech do other things but I believe adding this task to the bot will be wonderful.

@Geagea: Could you provide more context / links please? Also see https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/How_to_report_a_bug - thanks!

A. This is not bug report but suggestion to improvement.

B. I am suggestion that CommunityTech bot will notify in article's talk page when new version of file is uploaded. CommunityTech already notifying when file going to be deleted. It will be great if he notify also when new version of file (in the atricle) uploaded.

Ah, thanks. Is this about the "Commons deletion notification bot" maybe? Or about the Community-Tech bot instead?

Community-Tech bot. Because it is already dropping notification in articles talk pages.

I believe Geagea is talking about "Commons deletion notification bot", which edits as Community Tech bot. Notifications about new versions of files in my opinion is out-of-scope of the original wish, but I can certainly see how it would be useful.

Better would be if MediaWiki monitored for image changes to an article and surfaced them in your watchlist like any other change. Deletion discussions are a bit different since they are completely invisible to the local wiki (unless of course the image gets deleted), which is why the bot was created.

Well yes, I meant to the "Commons deletion notification bot" and agree also agree that it is out of the original wish scope, but I think it's might be very useful.

Regarding to your idea:

MediaWiki monitored for image changes to an article and surfaced them in your watchlist like any other change.

If MediaWiki monitored for image changes to an article the it be a page in he. wiki which any user cad add this page to his watchlist. thats similar to SteinsplitterBot.

But the way "Commons deletion notification bot" works is better because it's notifying the the users that contribut to the article wich use the photo.

Alredy said above - This is not bug report but suggestion to improvement.

Explanations: this file is in use in a lots of articles. although Wikimedia Commons have ruls for overwriting existing files still we have users thar re-uploding new version. In this case the map used in articles of conflict and small change of the map might be prolematic. if new a file overwriting the existing file only the users that have the file in thiere wachlist notified about it. Normally the articles contributors are not notified. So notofocation in the articles talk page can solve it.

Declining as out of scope for Commons Deletion Notification bot. If this functionality is still desired, feel free to propose it in the next Community Wishlist Survey (which should happen early next year).

In my own opinion, while I think this functionality could be useful, it would only make sense as an opt-in feature. Some files such as COVID maps, etc., are updated frequently and a talk page notification via a bot would produce far too much noise. A better approach in my opinion would be to surface changes to files used on pages that you are watching, similar to how the watchlist can show related changes to Wikidata items.
