[AMC] Consider making 'User Profile' preferences accessible via mobile Settings
Closed, DuplicatePublic

Description

Description

Giving users access to the User Profile preferences via the mobile site/skin could be valuable. Seems like something we could investigate further.

From a discussion about being able to access desktop settings via the mobile site/skin (https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Topic:Upsnns63k0n6xlfc):

@AHollender (WMF) While I would say all of tabs, the one I am mainly focused on using the "User profile" tab. It feels so cross platform with all the ways it used depending on what platform it is. They have features such as the ability to change ones password, change in signature exc, and not so much the font style or other computer exclusive platforms.

@ovasileva not sure where this should live for now. I feel like the scope is larger than just a design question. Thoughts?

@ovasileva it's an interesting idea, but i'd say these pages are not the same - this page is available to anonymous users. I think as part of desktop refresh we're going to need a similar page for local desktop preferences that apply to anons and possibly that might be a good place for this conversation to happen.

+1 on this - let's leave it in the desktop refresh board for now

Perfect being the enemy of the good, I think at least the link to Special:Preferences from Special:MobilePreferences should be added for users. I mean, Special:Preferences looks awful due to its table use, but users still need to have this link somewhere, since it contains the most basic preferences.

As we've had some asks on enwiki, likely going to shoe-horn this in to MediaWiki:Mobile-frontend-mobile-option-amc-experiment-description

See mock-up at https://test.m.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:MobileOptions

@Xaosflux thanks for continuing to work on this. I think it would make sense to put the link to Special:Preferences below the Advanced Mode section, since it is not directly related.

@alexhollender , yes something like that may be even better, but that requires a software change as no interface messages have been exposed for local project customization there - a "footer" message for example could be used. My example is somewhat abusing the "advanced options" long description field (when all you have is a hammer....)

So I guess this is a case of patch welcome. We're currently focused on desktop changes, but would be able to provide code review capacity if someone wants to help drive this change.

Is there an obvious way for logged-out mobile users to navigate to Special:MobileOptions? I don't see the Settings link in the sidebar but not sure if I'm missing some other route they might get there from.

I was initially very confused by this question, but then after looking it looks like settings has been removed from the anonymous experience which is a regression cc @ovasileva I have created T307696 to track that.

The Moderator Tools team is starting to explore how we could do this most effectively - input valued at https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Moderator_Tools/Content_moderation_on_mobile_web/Preferences or in this ticket.

We've shared some mockups for different options for how Preferences could be styled at T310007 - feedback welcome!

We posted a more extensive set of mockups and explorations detailing how we're thinking about preferences at https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Moderator_Tools/Content_moderation_on_mobile_web/Preferences - please take a look and let us know what you think!
