Long story short, several old entries are broken because there's bad data in the DB (serialized PHP classes). That can be fixed by a maintenance script, which I already wrote (https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/482499) but I'm currently waiting for input on T34478 and T213478 to fix them in the same script.

Oh, and T187153#5397580 explains why we started getting this error again although the code already has a hack in place.
