@Anthere I think this is more likely because the number of images are quite many. waiting for a while will definitely load the page. Below is a screenshot I have from the campaign.

@Anthere @Eugene233 I think we will need to decide a suitable maximum number of images we allow. Then, when it's checking the categories it can just abort once it has the max number of images.
Some of the Wiki Loves monuments categories have over 200,000 images. The tool can handle a campaign that large, but the query takes forever as we can only grab 500 at a time from the API.

So I have tried again. Waited waited waited and still nothing is loading.
So I went to campaign edition,
changed depth to 1. Works.
changed depth to 2. Works
changed depth to 3. Works
changed depth to 4. 18 000 images. Stuck. Then finally loaded after several back and forth
Maybe it means that my connexion is not good. But either way... I see not why it would stay stuck given that it is only supposed to display one image. Why is that getting stuck ? Is it required to load everything ?

I'm able to access a campaign with "Brussels (municipality)" category up to depth 5 (maximum allowed at the moment). It gets up to 26687 images and finishes loading on participate page in under 10 seconds.
Can you test to see if you can access this test campaign with the same category? https://tools.wmflabs.org/isa/campaigns/20
If that doesn't load for you it may be something Safari browser specific to figure out.
