Aklapper renamed this task from red pin on maps does not show on Firefox Mac to Red pin position marker on a map is not shown anymore when opening the map image.Sep 12 2019, 11:05 AM
Aklapper renamed this task from Red pin position marker on a map is not shown anymore when opening the map image to Red pin (location mark) on a map is not shown anymore when opening the map image.

The red pin is not part of the image but is an additional layer on top, based on the coordinates in that article.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Location_map provides this functionality on English Wikipedia.

Technically speaking this is expected behavior when you open the image itself (emphasis by me).

From a user point of view, this might not be expected behavior though.

I have no good idea how to fix this without either creating gazillions of maps which include the mark in the image (not a good idea; plus you hardcode the red color which destroys additional color or place name display options), or without passing coordinates as a URL parameter to the File: page of that image and/or MediaViewer and having both of them have additional code to interpret that URL parameter and display again a mark on top. Both would not solve the problem either if you directly and only open the image itself in your browser.

So this task, though it makes sense to me, might be realistically declined because no idea how to implement that in a feasible way without creating new/more problems.

OK - pity it cant be fixed in an elegant way (eg putting pin on opened map at same co-ordinates).

Thats too bad because it detracts from Wikipedia (as it appears not to work)

Thank you.

This can be considered a long-standing design choice on Wikipedia, rather than a bug. Some alternatives are discussed in T120809. Of which some may be poorer choice cartographically. It probably needs to be discussed on Wikipedia if they want to shift towards more wide-spread use of different kinds of location maps.
