Problem cited to Paypal:
I'm seeking help with this issue regarding inaccurate messaging that is coming from Paypal. Our Donor Services team has raised this previously and it is a real thorn in our side to have to explain to donors that it is not Wikimedia that is suspending their subscription but rather Paypal seeking updated card on file information. Example is below. Could you please treat as priority as we have had ~ 100 or so donors complain to us about this and it isn't Wiki that has this requirement. We are trying to remove these sorts of friction points before we go into our big season here in the next couple of weeks. Can you assist?
Paypal's response:
Your customer’s are receiving this message because of a setting that Wikimedia has in their recurring payments flow.
This is setup in failed payment instruction (via payment failure threshold) as part of the recurring payment setup e.g. suspend automatically on 2 failed payments, we use the language that says ‘merchant has suspended automatic payments….’ As this is the setting that you have in your system.
Our recommendation is that would be to set the max failed payments to 0 which would mean unlimited failures and then the profile can only be canceled by Wikimedia or the customer/donor. This change can be applied to ALL of their profiles without having to get customer interaction because it is not a change to the terms/conditions of the profile. So it can be a blanket API batch script that can be made up that runs the update profile api call against every profile they have listed to make the change.
We can engage a technical contact for your team to work with on this.
@FRTECH: I'd like to ask for some support here in deciphering this suggested change by PayPal if possible. I do not understand the implications of this nor convinced it will resolve the issue. Thank you!
Thanks,
