Browser crash editing page on mediawiki.org with VE
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

This happens when deleting a chunk of content from this page: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Technology/Goals/2019-20_Q1

As soon as I press the "delete" key on my keyboard, the browser (Chrome 77.0.3865.90) crashes.

It happens every time, very easy to reproduce.

Here's a video:

Event Timeline

I couldn't reproduce on my Opera browser (Chromium-based).

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; WOW64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/77.0.3865.90 Safari/537.36 OPR/64.0.3417.41 (Edition beta)

@Gilles are you able to try reproducing this issue again? We haven't been able to cause the behavior you experienced on our end which makes trying to fix it difficult. Thank you!

Still happens every time on Chrome 77.0.3865.120 (small update happened since). I cannot reproduce it on Chrome Canary (80.0.3947.0).

I've also just noticed that it doesn't happen when logged out in an Incognito window (which might be why Canary doesn't crash, since I'm not logged in on that browser).

I tried logging into the Incognito window of 77.0.3865.120 and was able to reproduce the crash again. This time I didn't even need to delete the content, mere drag-selecting crashed the browser.

Did you try to reproduce it while logged in?

I'm happy to capture more data to help figure out the root cause of this. I've just never debugged a full-blown browser crash before, so not sure where to start.

Unlikely to be still reproducible in today's browsers.
