Task: See if texts annotated with Linked data in a tool like Recogito can be connected to an old platform like Alvin
Background: Uppsala University had an Open Access week that I guess is part of Plan-S. This workshop was part of that
Scenario
- A: A Linked data annotated book like Iliad can be illustrated by pictures in Alvin just by using the linked objects for navigation
- B: When looking on objects in Alvin it should be possible to find texts and maps annotated with linked data
We need to make cultural data available for people doing digital humanities research. Today when I check cultural metadata it is most strings and not things and very weak see examples
- Ksamsök Gustav II Adolf
- Kulturnav Gustav II Adolf
- Compare Wikidata Gustav II Adolf Q52938 / graf with 109 properties 76 external identifiers 69 wiki articles
Another linked data antipattern I see is that a plattfom like Wikipedia/Wikidata has an notability requirement i.e. many people cant get an Identifiers that can be reused by more tools see sessions this weekend in Berlin
- reinstating Female Artists to the Cultural Record via Wikidata
- about women as an underrepresented group Her Natural History
- I guess the solution is an infrastructure of Wikibase installations that is well curated and no problem with the notability for underrepresented groups

Workflow
1) The text gets annotated in Recogito
At a workshop at Digital Humaniora in Uppsala with Elton Barker we learned how to annotate text with the tool Recogito developed by the Pelagios initiativ using Linked data and the Pleiades gazetteer.
see also:
The text can be imported with automatic name entity recognition NER
2) Linked data does the magic
- Tegian is same as pleiades.stoa.org/places/570707
- pleiades 570707 is same as Wikidata Q645234
- Wikidata Q645234 has same as Alvin alvin-place:5645
See list of other properties in WIkidata connected to objects that has Property 1584 Pleiades ID
3) Record in Alvin with no Linked data and bad structured metadata is found
Link Alvin record
- Location Tegea = Wikidata Q645234
- Person Persson, Axel W., 1888-1951 = Wikidata Q481346
- place of burial (Wikidata Property P119) is just 100 meter from the workshop we had yesterday at the Library of Karin Boye regarding to Wikidata 59°51'20.884"N, 17°37'33.445"E see also WD gaveyard map
From "dead fish" to active Linked data member
The above POC is done mostly in Wikidata
- Alvin has grouped some locations like alvin-place:5645
- Wikidata add alvin-place:5645 same as Wikidata Q645234
Lesson learned from the workshop yesterday is that domain experts need to start communicate with people adding Metadata in the archives
- is Tegea the right "level"/granularity or are we interested in parts of the picture
- how should locations be mentioned?
- should a specific location authority be used? as pleiades.stoa.org/places, why dont we have this in Sweden for Swedish historical places/ categories of interests, maybe Tora is a start [T233275]
- today its a mess in Tora as you cant understand if its a place, parish or something else... does it matter... ask the end users
- why do we just group person, place, organisation we need Things not Strings
To do in Alvin
- add easier way of giving feedback on items
- like this free tool called Phabricator
- or to use something like Github
- if the data is active you should be able to see versions in Alvin of objects data
- if delivering a good solution Alvin needs to start speak with people doing research et. al. what user stories they have
- Link video
Misc
Pleiades a community-built gazetteer and graph of ancient places. It publishes authoritative information about ancient places and spaces, providing unique services for finding,
- Map places in Wikidata with Pleiades id in Greece, orange is place where also we have connected Alvin
- all places in Wikidata with Alvin id green dot location with both Alvin and Pleiades
Alvin is a platform for digital collections and digitized cultural heritage with a much more unmature location information and no support for Linked data
- Wikipedia use Wikicommons for storing pictures new is that
- Wikicommon is a local installation of "Wikidata" see Wikibase
- all pictures now can have structured data as linked objects
- the Wikicommon Wikibase "reuse" the ontology of Wikidata i.e. all people places... in Wikidata can be referenced
- new tools are created to add Linked data on pictures in a structured way using linked data see tweet
