For background on the entire newcomer tasks project, see this epic. Because of the size of this project, this separate epic was created to work on the “topic matching” portion of the project.

The newcomer tasks project uses the newcomer homepage to give newcomers a set of suggested articles to edit based on maintenance templates that are in the articles. Research shows that people are more likely to interact with suggestions that match their topical interests.

Therefore, the work in this epic will be about providing newcomers with suggestions that match their topics of interest, even when they have no previous edit history.

Our approach will be to use the ORES drafttopic model to match articles to newcomers, and to add interfaces for the newcomers to select and edit topics of interest.
