Special:ShortUrl already exists as part of MediaWiki-extensions-ShortUrl, which is currently deployed on multiple wmf sites (search for wmgUseShortUrl)

There are plans to undeploy that extension from Wikimedia sites. Once that's done, there's nothing to prevent this.

@Ammarpad: I am not aware of any plans (apart from vague ideas), could you please point to them?
I found T187045: Code Stewardship Review: ShortUrl Extension, maybe that is what this task should depend on (and be marked as stalled)?

Ammarpad changed the task status from Open to Stalled.Dec 11 2019, 11:05 AM

@Aklapper Yes that. The plans are not yet concrete, but it's quite clear it is going to happen in one way or another.

Please consult communities first before undeploying Extension ShortUrl. Many projects use them as stable shorturls in many places and does not want their workflow to breakdown.

To be clear, any short URLs created using the ShortUrl system (/s/) will be supported forever: we don't break working URLs. We do however plan to stop the creation of new URLs in favor of w.wiki.

If there are specific features in the old system you/the communities you're in depend upon that aren't in the new one, I'd like to hear them and figure out how address those needs. T187045 is a good task for that.
