Add wikiworkshop.org to the Foundation's DNS
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Research is in the process of transferring wikiworkshop.org to WMF. We have been notified that unless the domain name is added to WMF's DNS nameservers, the website can become inaccessible and we ideally don't want this to happen as this is a higher traffic time for the website.

Are there any subdomains etc?

Or does the domain only need to point at 171.64.75.80?

I'm assuming that, for now, the hosting of the web service (and email?) is not moving, just the whois ownership and DNS service? We usually need a fair bit more information than this to handle such a case smoothly. At a glance it looks like there's potentially more to this (e.g. they have MX and SPF records, are there are also DMARC and such we need to copy?). Also, basic TLS doesn't seem to work on the target site, either. Is there a project-level task or something for whatever transition is happening here?

Assigning to @leila as per BBlack and Reedy comments, as there seems to be some additional information required. Please feel free to reassign to the right person you are in contact with, as per your original comment there may be 3rd parties involved. Other than that, I will let Traffic handle the request on their own (I am just trying to move forward tasks while on clinic duty).

There are no subdomains.

correct. (We're having a discussion to move the hosting to github in the near future so if you have input we should be aware of, please share.)

Your questions bring me to the limits of my knowledge. I will attempt to answer and if they don't make sense, we can try some other way.

  • DMARC: my understanding is that this is related to email services. we don't need any email services if that helps you drop that item.
  • SPF: I /think/ it's related to email, too, so I wonder if we can not worry about it per above.

Also, basic TLS doesn't seem to work on the target site, either.

I'm not sure how I can help here.

Is there a project-level task or something for whatever transition is happening here?

There is none as I (naively?) though it's relatively straightforward.

This question isn't directly related but might help indirectly clear some confusion:

Who will pay for the domain name when it expires?

(Noting that DNS is where we map domain names to web hosts, which is within reason "free" for us, but domain registration and expiration is external to us.)

Research, I assume (the task of bringing the domain to WMF owned domains is being done by Legal.)

@BBlack Are Leila's answers covering all your questions or do you need additional information to propose a way to move forward?

All of this is irregular and outside of policies we like to adhere to, but I'll push a zonefile to our nameservers which supports the bare minimum (existing Stanford-hosted IPs for the insecure site http://wikiworkshop.org and the same IP for redirects from http://www.wikiworkshop.org , and nothing else ). At some point after the holidays are over, I'd like to find out what the overall intent and/or plan is here so that we can provide some additional guidance and get this onto some kind of more-acceptable path though.

Allow me to suggest a meeting after Christmas between Research and Traffic, so there is mutual understanding of what needs correction for this and future cases, I believe the low bandwith of Phabricator may be not ideal for further discussions. Leila may be able to gather more information about the project by then, and BBlack could make clear the concerns about the technical aspects so they can be solved or avoided in future cases. 0:-)

@jcrespo makes sense. I'll schedule a meeting for after the holidays. :) (btw, I'm not sure when I can resolve this task. Please go ahead and do it if it's considered done from your perspective.)

@BBlack thanks for supporting us with this and looking forward to talk more after the holidays.
