Top editors: bot list includes human editors that only temporarily had the bot flag
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

Hello,
XTools version: 3.10.9-7a9c5588

In this example you can found that my account (also @Meno25 account) considered as (Former bot) and listed on bot list instead of editors list. Because my account took bot flag on 2016 to help the community in few things (because there's no admin bot on arwiki). Same thing with Meno25.

So, please if you can found solution here, as it's not fair to considered us as a "bots".

Suggestion from https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Topic:Vc3mfb3yupks6fqx: report accounts as former bots only if they help the bot flag for an extended period (say a month).

@alanajjar I can understand the frustration with the first issue, but I don't think there is a way to determine what accounts that are technically former bots shouldn't be considered bots
@MusikAnimal for the second issue, can ArticleInfoRepository's getBotData make it clear that current bots shouldn't be considered former bots? The query just does a union with the data, and I think if it selects former and then current, rather than the other way around, any issue with bots being duplicated as both current and former will resolve is favor of being listed as current (but I could be misunderstanding it completely :) )

Correct. Ideally communities wouldn't use the bot flag on human accounts, and instead use a dedicated bot account for automated editing.

Indeed, I tried this and your solution seemed to work. Thanks! This fix will go out with the next release.

The issue with current bots being reported as former is now fixed. I don't know what to do about humans who were formerly bots. This issue has come up a few times over the years. At https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Topic:Vc3mfb3yupks6fqx it was suggested that we report accounts as former bots only if they were a bot for an extended period of time (maybe a month?). This still isn't a solution, rather just a workaround that will still have false positives, and I'm not sure what the effect will be on performance. It's certainly worthy of further investigation, so let's leave this open for now.
