Request creation of Analytics VPS project
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

Project Name: analytics

Wikitech Usernames of requestors: Computer Fizz

Purpose: Tried to run this on Toolforge, didn't have the requirements I needed

Brief description: I will be using node.js, a mysql server, and (possibly?) php as well. the disk space used will depend on what i collect.

How soon you are hoping this can be fulfilled: I want to start this at the beginning of a new month, but since about 30 minutes is an unreasonable processing time, just any time in january is fine.

Event Timeline

Unfortunately a tenant of that name already exists. Have you asked whether
your project could happen in the existing tenant? If it can't then can you
tell us more about the project so another name can be found?

I own the toolforge name "analytics", so I assumed that cloud vps name would be available as well. Since I'm not sure what that other person is using it for, is "edit-analytics" available?

Please provide more details about this. What do you need that Toolforge could not provide?

Project Name: analytics

This is a horribly generic project name, and as @Krenair pointed out already, also taken. Could you explain what "analytics" you are hoping to provide to the Wikimedia community?

I needed to start a MySQL server using Toolforge. This failed due to not having the right permissions, and on Discord I was told I would need to request a Cloud VPS in order to do this.

I already explained what analytics I wanted to do when I requested my Toolforge project, but to re-summarize, I am collecting data about edits on enwiki about what edit changes and what type of user does so. Since a lot of information abotu that is outdated

Toolforge provides User databases on the tools.db.svc.eqiad.wmflabs host (also known as toolsdb in some documentation) for this purpose.

Are there existing tools which provide the "outdated" information you are referring to? If so, you might get more value for your volunteer efforts by reaching out to the maintainers of those tools and offering to help improve them than starting your own tool. I think there are quite a number of tools, such as https://xtools.wmflabs.org/ec, which provide some type of edit metrics.

fuck. that would have been good to know like 30 minutes ago. now i gotta wait a whole month to try again

and no, i am using human labor for things automated stuff like that can't scrape

If you have a link handy to your request, then please feel free to post it.

It is not clear to me why you need to wait a whole month.

@Computer_Fizz Does this mean that Toolforge will work for your project? If so, I would like to close this request as declined.

If not, you need to choose a new project name which is not already in use by existing Cloud VPS projects. Your suggestion of "edit-analytics" might be reasonable, but I am having a difficult time evaluating that as the only description that you have given of the goal of the project is "collecting analytics about edits to replace the february 2007 statistic that's still being used today for some reason", and that description does not provide me with much context.

For any project hoping to produce reliable metrics about on-wiki activities, I also recommend joining the analytics@lists.wikimedia.org mailing list and getting feedback there on the general plan. This mailing list is used by members of the Wikimedia Foundation's Analytics team as well as other researchers and technical contributors to wikimedia projects to discuss best practices and data sources related to our movement.
