Multiplatform session length metric
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

As mentioned in T119352, relying on pageviews as THE readership metric is antiquated and does not fully reflect how our users interact with our products (sites, Wikipedia apps).

Use cases:

  • Inform strategic planning by having a baseline understanding of how long users interact with our products for
  • Analyze impact of new features & experiences in moving the average (or percentile) session lengths

To that end, the MVP version of this dataset should let us see & track:

  • Average, median, and 99th percentile session lengths for each platform (web, iOS, Android)

As a bonus, it might be good to have the metrics broken down by the following dimensions for comparing markets/populations:

  • By wiki
  • By country
  • By app version (use case: we release an update and want to compare without doing an A/B test)

As part of trying to:

  • Create a clearer understanding of what work has been done towards Session Length
  • Ensure that there is a history of past work, comments and commits
  • Understand what more is needed to achieve our end goal of measuring and view how long users engage with our products

I am resolving this and pointing to https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T267494 as the newly defined parent task.
