Kindle 5th generation Silk Browser (2012) can't access Wikipedia pages (security warning)

Description

Forwarding a request that was sent to Wikimedia Germany via email (translated from German)

I've been looking for a solution to my problem with Amazon, but haven't found help yet. In the German de.Amazonforum.com there are gradually more and more people who have the same problem as me:

With a 5th generation Kindle paperback, (that is, an older model), you can use the control bar to open a (internal?) browser that accesses Wikipedia. This browser and Wikipedia can also be retrieved directly from the book you are currently reading. This worked fine until recently. You could easily access the extensive information from Wikipedia, which could be useful when reading political or historical books.

Now, unfortunately, this no longer works.

  • Only rudimentary information is offered, e.g. lists of names.
  • Instead of opening Wikipedia, an error message is shown: `Browser Connection Security Issues.

From the text of the error message it can be seen that Wikimedia doesn't allow access to Wikipedia for security reasons.
Apparently, even the rudimentary information will soon no longer be available. It is recommended that you use a new browser or, consult IT managers. Unfortunately, I have not been able to take this advice, nor have others so far.
The Amazon Service advises to reset the Kindle. But this does not solve the problem, because this doesn't install a new browser.

Questions

  • Do you know the problem?
  • Do you know what could be done?
  • Do you know who else should be addressed?

It's unlikely that anyone would want to hack a Kindle. Can't we let the special browser continue to run as before? With all due respect for security and data protection. A great thing is being sacrificed to privacy here.

With kind regards and many thanks for your effort

@Aklapper Any idea what a good project tag for this task might be?

I am not really sure what to add to what's already been written:

Anyone is free to ask Amazon to update their Kindle browser so its users are secure.

This has nothing to do with "cracking a Kindle". It is about your passwords and your data sent over an insecure connection, due to outdated browser software or encyrption libraries on your system.

Ultimately this is amazon's problem, and they have to be convinced to update their web browser to keep up with the times (Resetting the device is silly advice and obviously is not going to do anything, you probably have to convince someone higher up on the amazon food chain to listen).

Aklapper renamed this task from Kindle 5th generation can't access Wikipedia pages (security warning) to Kindle 5th generation Silk Browser (2012) can't access Wikipedia pages (security warning).Feb 17 2020, 9:19 AM
