Clicking on "Remove as Prominent" from a Wikimedia Commons file page result in dropping the related references

Description

Hello everybody!

Working on the boz-mw framework I was able to successfully contribute to some M-items in Wikimedia Commons using the wbeditentity API. I saved a couple of "depicted" statements (with rank = preferred, to mark it as prominent) and, because I love to add references, I also added a reference.

Then I noticed that clicking on the " Prominent" link, with the intention of removing the "Mark as Prominent" flag, I also accidentally dropped the reference to that statement that I have originally created with my bot.

This is a diff after that action:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Antwain_Delawarence_Aguillard_(Legavolley_2014).jpg&diff=401332771&oldid=401330801

Even if I know that everything is in alpha, and even if I know that maybe references are not too much useful in this area, I think that marking something as not prominent - aka lowering the rank of a statement from preferred to normal - should not result in dropping another unrelated information like references, isn't it?

What are your thoughts? Thank you!

Hello. References are not supported on Commons at this time. They can indeed be set via the API, but that's a leftover functionality from Wikibase.

Checked on commons betalabs - changing the rank ("Mark as prominent" ) doesn't affect references.
