Variant tests: feature suggested edits (E vs. F vs. G)
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

[ draft description ]

Background
The first iteration of the newcomer tasks (a.k.a. "Suggested edits") feature placed it as one of many modules of content that may be accessed on the newcomer homepage. Initial numbers indicate around 13-17% of people who visit the homepage interact with the module (range across platforms and language wikis).

Goal:
Increase the number of newcomers who interact with Suggested edits.

Hypothesis:
Centering Suggested edits as the focal point of the newcomer experience will increase engagement – i.e., more users will interact with Suggested edits (e.g., filtering edits by topic or difficulty level, opening an article from the module).

Proposal

Test new variants where the Suggested edits module is a featured part of the newcomer experience.

Variant E: Takeover the homepage
This variant assumes that driving editing is the core goal of the newcomer experience.
The start module is removed entirely, since onboarding and orientation is focused on Suggested edits, and all other modules are re-conceptualised as tools/features to aid users trying editing/Suggested edits.

Variant F: Featured in a Special page
This variant assumes there is value in the newcomer homepage besides being a vehicle for driving editing, but enables users who are focused on Suggested edits to access the “Special:Suggested edits” page directly. The standalone Suggested edit page exposes topic and task filtering more explicitly.

Variant G: Integrated suggested edits (appearing as a widget/component over relevant articles)
This variant imagines Suggested edits less as a destination and more as a tool that can be opened over site content similar to items in the “Tools” area of the site. It leverages the same guidance panel component and unifies the two components of Suggested edits into one UI.

I think Declined probably makes the most sense for this one.
