Language Option in app only changes search language
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

At the moment, the Language option in the application menu controls both the interface language and the search language. It can cause a situation where the user is typing in a language different than what the search is configured to and not results are returned without any indications why. We would explore a long term solution along with other teams, for MVP launch we can consider below changes.

  1. Get rid of the Language option in the application menu.
  2. Make the interface language always the same as the phone.
    1. Language option only changes the search language.
  3. Add a supportive text on No Results Found Screen.

@SGautam_WMF: Assuming this task is about the KaiOS-Wikipedia-app code project, hence adding that project tag so other people who don't know or don't care about random team tags can also find this task when searching via projects.

Thanks @Aklapper.

For anyone following, T244401 is related to the longer term solution exploration.

Also, after syncing with @SGautam_WMF today, I've updated the task to include the home search screen design (imported from T244401)

@SGautam_WMF @AMuigai just to confirm: going through with this proposal means users will have no way to change app language (at least in this shorter term solution), correct?

Also @SGautam_WMF would you mind clarifying what should happen when a user clicks on "SEARCH" center softkey in the home screen? Thanks

This is just a label, no action is to attach to it.

Yes, for the MVP version of the app we aren't providing this within the app. During MVP, this would be set to the same language as device.

Thanks @SGautam_WMF

Also I think we talked about this before elsewhere, but does the "Search Wikipedia" placeholder text (in the search bar) always stay in the language of the phone/app, regardless of search language configuration? Or if, for example, search language was set to Hindi should it read "विकिपीडिया में खोजें"?

Feels like it would be a good visual cue for the user, and yet at the same time it would not really fit with the rest of the home screen text in English (or whatever app language is) 🤔

Yeah @eamedina, we did discuss about it when we were thinking of a long term solution for search experience. For now, as we are limiting the use of Language softkey to only change the search language, it would be fine if "Search Wikipedia" placeholder can set according to search language, like you mentioned Hindi search language scenario. Also to keep in mind, this placeholder text comes from translate wiki so there could be a possibility that it remains in English despite a change in search language due to unavailability of translation.

I find it problematic that we don't show explicitly what is the current search language. Using the placeholder as a hint has several issues: it may not be translated and as soon as you start typing it's gone.

Yea I'm trying to think of other ways of signaling search language other than the placeholder... some type of label next to search bar or softkey?

Will keep an eye on this thread for resolution, happy to talk and brainstorm in a call as well.

We will keep it as is right now in the test version for MVP - language option supports both app and search language, as well as keep language in the settings menu, which
also controls both app and search.

Therefore sending back to the team backlog.

We should determine if users are able to make the distinction between app and search language behaviour as we explore options to make the distinction more explicit.

@SGautam_WMF we've decided to push this from month 2 to 3 so we have more time to think and discuss.
