Difficulty in switching language of article on Jio 2 device
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Problem

The Wikipedia app on KaiOS allows a user to read the article in different languages. Users can choose to switch the language of an article from article quick links(sections, quick facts, gallery, language). Language selection works fine on Jio one devices, however, it is challenging to do so on the Jio 2. The problem is linked to selecting predictive text, which automatically adds a space.

How to replicate

After selecting an article, switch the language to "Hindi", it showsd Hindi on the language search result but disappears when I tried you select it with the help of center key on D-PAD. It seems this D-PAD keypress inserts an extra space that causes this issue.

Request

Resolve for handling language selection when a space is added to language search

This looks like an issue with how predictive text works on Jio 2. If you select the suggested text, it automatically adds a space after your word/search which then leads to no results.

We could try trimming the search input. I don't see any case where leading or trailing spaces would be significant.

Was thinking the same

This is working as expected, moving it for product signoff.

@Jpita @eamedina This is working when switching languages from within the article through the quick links. It does not seem to be working when changing the language from within the article menu language option.

oh...
thought it was the same menu, didn't even think of testing the article menu, my bad.
@eamedina shouldn't it be the same menu/code?

Good catch Angie! The buggy behavior I'm seeing is:

  • if you open the article menu of any article
  • go to the language option
  • type some text, and then press the back key to delete

And then instead of deleting a letter, it's closing the language window and going back to article menu.

Is this what everybody else is seeing as well? Let's confirm that this little bug deserves it's own Phabricator ticket.

Currently on the jio phone 2 I can't even write on the text box, the "search" button only scrolls up in the language list, does not allow me to focus on the text box.
I'm very confused, why are these 2 pages not the same (quick actions->language and article menu->laguage)?

moving this to sign off, the fix will be done on T250253, agree @AMuigai ?
