Make "Reply" link easier for people at ar.wiki to discover/notice
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Several contributors to ar.wiki have mentioned [1][2] that the "Reply" link, in its current form, can be difficult to notice. Specifically, people have said [3]

  • "...in english Reply is a 4 characters word but in Arabic it is only 2 characters, and frankly after activating the feature I spent some time to find the word on the page and I had to read the mediawiki documentation to learn how to the tool works.
  • "...the word “Reply”, we have to find a way to enhance it or show it more."
  • "I suggest to put [the word reply] in a blue box with white characters and away from the text with an EM."

This task is about exploring how we might change the visual appearance of the make the "Reply" link/affordance to make it more discoverable.

Done

  • Produce a series of mockups that show a series of approaches that could make it easier for people, across languages, to discover/notice the "Reply" link/affordance
    • Rather than changing the visual treatment of the link to make the "Reply" feature more discoverable, per T249184#6023481 and T249184#6023550, our first step was to change the translation of the "Reply" link's text from "Reply" to "Do the reply" on ar.wiki.

IMO, a simple link, no matter the length, does not stand out enough. My (not a UX/design person) suggestion to make it more noticeable would be to make it an OOUI button (or look like one) like the publish page/changes button. However, this might make it stand out too much or clutter discussions.

Many users are suggesting putting the word "reply" between these two symbols: <<reply>>.
Something like this:

I think making it a button would be too distracting. I'd suggest to just put it inside parentheses: (Reply), that'd work across languages

What about making the formatting the same as or similar to the section edit buttons (i.e. "[ reply ]" in Vector and most skins, "reply" with an icon to the left in Timeless)?

We will be considering various approaches to making the link more visible, including the ones mentioned here. In the meantime I would suggest lengthening the translation in Arabic (e.g. "Reply to this" / "Reply to this comment").

{{done}} using: "Do the reply", قم بالردّ. Is it acceptable?

We default to your expertise here, @Dyolf77_WMF. So if you think "Do the reply", قم بالردّ is best, that sounds great to us.

Our only request is that if you notice people being confused by what the link means/does, that you'll let us know so we can work together to think of a different approach.
