To add some guessed historical context I think that this was meant to cover the case that local modifications are made in the netbox-extras checkout in /srv/... on the netbox production hosts.
Given that now we deploy the netbox-extras repo via explicit deployment (see https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Netbox#Netbox_Extras ), in case of local modifications the deployment will fail and the operator will see it right away.
Hence I'm closing this as declined. Thanks for the ping @SLyngshede-WMF
