Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

T249063 will link the Reply change tag to a yet-to-be created page [1] that will be translated into the local languages of each of our partner wikis.

As an intermediate step, before this page is created, we would like for the Reply change tag, at each of our four partner wikis to link here: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Talk_pages_project/replying.

Page links

The Reply change tag, at each of our four partner wikis should be linked as follows:

Done

  • The Reply change tag, at each of our four partner wikis should be linked to the URLs shown in the "Page links" section above

Do I understand it correctly the idea of this task for the Dutch Wikipedia is an edit on the page https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Tag-discussiontools-reply? Or should that happen on translatewiki?

Do I understand it correctly the idea of this task for the Dutch Wikipedia is an edit on the page https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Tag-discussiontools-reply? Or should that happen on translatewiki?

I'm glad you asked, @AdHuikeshoven. In short, no...

The idea of this task is to, for the time being, have the Reply change tag on each of our partner wikis (of which, Dutch Wikipedia is one) link to this page: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Talk_pages_project/replying.

In parallel, we are going to create a new new page on https://www.mediawiki.org/ (maybe something like https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Talk_pages_project/Features) that will contain information about the feature.

Once this page is created, we were thinking this page would be translated into Dutch and the Reply change tag link would be changed so people clicking on it will be led to the https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Talk_pages_project/Features page.

I've listed these steps below. Can you please let us know if you think we should make adjustments to the "Steps" described below?

Steps

  1. Link the Reply change tag to https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Talk_pages_project/replying (that's what this task is about doing)
  2. Create a page on MediaWiki.org that contains information about the Reply tool and how to turn it on. The URL of this page might be https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Talk_pages_project/Features (this will happen in T250539)
  3. Translate the contents of https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Talk_pages_project/Features into Dutch, Arabic, French and Hungarian (the languages of our four partner wikis)
  4. Link the Reply change tag to https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Talk_pages_project/Features (this will happen in T249063)

As I wrote on T249063 I would like the link from recent changes of the Dutch Wikipedia to a page on the Dutch Wikipedia. On that page I would like to have a section "Why are we as the Dutch community doing this" in stead of "Why is the Foundation working on these features". By all means I want to avoid any possible impression the Foundation is imposing something on the Dutch Wikipedia community. I want to have the impression that the Dutch Wikipedia community is fully in control over this development process. Yes, there can be a section Who are developing these tools"? In that section it can be explained that the technical side is done by paid staff hired by the Wikipedia Foundation which is funded by donations from readers/viewers.

So step 1 is asking to change https://translatewiki.net/wiki/MediaWiki:Tag-discussiontools-reply/nl ?

So step 1 is asking to change https://translatewiki.net/wiki/MediaWiki:Tag-discussiontools-reply/nl ?

That would be best to change locally on the Mediawiki:Taf-discussiontools-reply page because a translation should be accurate and exact as it will be seen by any dutch user of the extension on any wiki (wikimedia or otherwise)

Correction: this task needs to get resolved before wikis can customize the destination of the change tag link. As such, I'm moving this to Ready for Development.

Change 593896 had a related patch set uploaded (by Esanders; owner: Esanders):
[mediawiki/extensions/DiscussionTools@master] Link the "Reply" tag to mediawiki.org

https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/593896

Change 593896 merged by jenkins-bot:

Should this be in Doing? @Esanders

Moving this to Blocked/Needs More Work to ensure we get to it during tomorrow's team meeting.

ppelberg claimed this task.

Re-opening this as hu.wiki's Reply tag is not currently linked. @Whatamidoing-WMF is reaching out to hu.wiki to have this corrected.

I fixed the message for hu on TranslateWiki about 2 weeks ago (landed in the code here: https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/mediawiki/extensions/DiscussionTools/+/594851/), but due to the rollback of wmf32 it hasn't been deployed yet.

@ppelberg the Reply tag is linked now on huwiki as well.

(The translatewiki version haven't arrived yet, but I linked directly to the local description page on huwiki.)

Understood and sounds good.
