Update links to doc.wikimedia.org
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

In November, WMF changed the structure of some links on doc.wikimedia.org. For example, doc.wikimedia.org/mediawiki-extensions-Wikibase/ became doc.wikimedia.org/Wikibase/, causing various links to our documentation to be oudated.

We should make sure that no outdated links are left in the open, to avoid community or developers being blocked by broken links.

Therefore we should:

  • Understand the scope of the change (is it only mediawiki-extensions-Wikibase/ or is there more to discover?
  • Search for all the links present in various places of our ecosystem and update them.
    • Wikidata.org
    • Wikiba.se
    • Anywhere else in the code

Event Timeline

CCing Release-Engineering-Team as I expect we can create a set of redirects from the old path to avoid needing to try to fix the links everywhere.
I had a little hunt through history but couldn't find when exactly this change happened?

In looking through Wikiba.se, there are currently no links to doc.wikimedia.org nor any broken links related to this ticket.

curl -I https://doc.wikimedia.org/mediawiki-extensions-Wikibase/ shows that there is a 302 Redirect in place.

Is there something left to do in this ticket (and if yes, how and where to search for such links)?

@Lea_Lacroix_WMDE: Given the two last comments, can this be resolved? If not, where to look? Thanks!

If there is still valid concern about broken links, the next step is to check the logs of the webserver hosting doc.wikimedia.org for 404s and other related errors.

WMDE-leszek claimed this task.

I believe we're done here unless there is the evidence showing otherwise.
