Granted, it's an older ubuntu LTS.. Can we build from source?

Yep, 10.04 LTS is using 1.6.3.

I wonder if we can get Ryan or someone to repackage it for us? Or just change to using the tarball rather than the packaged version?

We've no specific benefits from upgrading, so upgrading with ubuntu releases is ok for now...
