Central Park Archives project
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

Central Park Archives is a short pilot study in the neighbourhood of Maunula in Helsinki. It is a local artist residency of Ali Akbar Mehta and Susanna Ånäs at arts organisation m-cult. The focus of the residency is on co-archiving practices and the topic is the public park area of the Central Park in Helsinki.

The project will involve local residents and activists in a study of their archiving needs and practices. The pilot will emphasize the issues of sustainability and openness, and investigate the boundaries of open practices, such privacy, sensitivity, notability and ownership.

The output involves a locative, mobile presentation with audio. The materials include any materials from the participants as well as field recordings and discussions with experts. The resulting mapping component will be applied to Wikidocumentaries for the applicable parts, possibly outside the scope of the project.

Create models for a wikidocumentary

  • Storytelling with maps
  • Locative audio, mobile experience

Additionally (possibly outside the scope of this project)

  • Use of Wikibase as a federated local archive
  • Use of Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata, Wikipedia, Wikisource for archiving, and their limits.
  • Online storage of materials in existing services: Internet Archive, Google, Microsoft, Apple, Flickr, other. Sharing scenarios needed.
  • Aggregation of related materials from external services, such as zoning maps from kartta.hel.fi or images from finna.fi. For Wikidocumentaries, a method for registering external sources is needed.
