PhysicalHosts report erroring because of dubious host
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

https://netbox.wikimedia.org/extras/reports/puppetdb.PhysicalHosts/ is alerting because I think https://puppetboard.wikimedia.org/node/puppet

expected device missing from Netbox: puppet

After a quick chat with @jbond the easiest might be to ignore it on the report side.

i took a bit more or a look at this with @Volans and it looks like this entry is from puppetmaster1001. i have noticed that some puppet commands such as puppet lookup add meta data to puppetdb if the host dose not exist my gut feeling is that something like this happened. I suggest on the puppet side we just let this node get purged along the normal time lines and agree that in netbox we ignore this host. perhaps go further and ignore any host unless they have a domain ending in:

  • wmnet
  • wikimedia.org

It should be straight forward to add a filter as you suggest although it's notable that the puppetdb proxy already gives us the short hostname so it'll have to altered very slightly but nbd i think.

Im not sure what else uses this microservice but i checked the logs and netbox is the only users since at least June 3rd. As such it may be asier to update the microservice to

  • send the fqdn
  • create a new end point to send the FQDN
  • do the filtering in the micoservice

This has not re-occurred anymore, solving for now.
