VE Cite tool fails to insert a reference into a template in New Wikitext mode
Closed, DuplicatePublic

Description

To reproduce:

  • Enable New Wikitext mode.
  • Edit the English Wikipedia article Rock n Roll Consciousness. (Tested on revision 963699187. Direct editing link.)
  • Scroll to the {{Album ratings}} template, to the line with the rev1score parameter.
  • Copy the URL https://www.allmusic.com/album/rock-n-roll-consciousness-mw0003032379 to the clipboard.
  • Delete the <ref> tag.
  • Put the caret after the {{Rating|3.5|5}} template.
  • Click the Cite button.
  • Click on the Automatic tab in the Cite inspector.
  • Paste the URL to the input box.
  • Click the Generate button.
  • The reference preview is displayed.
  • Click Insert.

Observed: Nothing is inserted.

Expected: A reference template is supposed to be inserted.

For a bit of background, I want to use the New Wikitext mode because it has the Cite tool with automatic generation of citation templates from URLs. I would use the actual Visual Editor, but I cannot because this template appears in a template, parameters can only be edited in source, and the Cite button doesn't work there.

I'm not sure whether the bug is in VE, Cite, or Citoid, so tagging all.
