Newcomer task: Update mobile guidance panel copy reminding users about section editing
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Problem

Users can currently only edit by section, with only the top (lead) section edit icon visible at first, since edit icons for each subsequent H2 section are only visible in the header when the section is expanded, and all sections are closed by default.

This is potentially a problem newcomers shown guidance (on the read-mode SE footer) advising them to tap on the edit pencil icon to start editing on first arriving on the page. This, combined with the pulsing blue dot on that first edit pencil only may result in users being confused about how to edit subsections.

Proposed solution

Update the read-mode footer text on mobile to include a note about needing to edit by section.
Proposed copy update:
Ready? Open the section you want to edit and tap the pencil icon.

hi @MMiller_WMF - here's my first attempt at the updated copy, please update and prioritize as you see fit.

@RHo -- since the sections on an article are collapsed by default, I'm concerned that the users won't see the pencil icons. How about: "Ready? Open the section you want to edit and tap the pencil icon"

Checked in testwiki wmf.39 - no issues found.

Notes:

  • there are many articles that do not have sections, yet the footer would refer to open the section and start editing. during my testing about 30% of the articles were lacking section structure.
  • the blue pulsing dot is still present which might be ok if the blue dot would be interpreted as a general indication of what needs to be clicked to start editing
  • users who decide not to edit a SE article need to go to the Homepage to select another one. There is noticeable delay to load the article set (a known issue). Would it be better to give users an option to go to the next article directly from the root screen just as the post-edit dialog does?

Moving for PM to make final call, but with some additional notes below.

IMHO the copy change still works OK for articles without sections, since then there is still the prominent edit pencil at the top that users would be likely to select as the sole section of the article.

  • the blue pulsing dot is still present which might be ok if the blue dot would be interpreted as a general indication of what needs to be clicked to start editing

I agree, esp. as it goes away after being tapped on. So if a user looking at a multi-section article clicks on the lead section edit pencil by accident when they wanted to edit the first h2 afterwards, it follows they would likely go back to read mode where they have another chance to see the notice about selecting the section edit pencil with the blue dot no longer present.

  • Agree about the lag, but this seems outside the scope of the task. I think the loading delay issue will be fixed the near-future as part of the performance improvement plan.

Thanks all. I think the outstanding issues @Etonkovidova listed are not blockers, and we are finished here.
