Create WMCH infrastructure repository
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Hello everybody,

It would be nice to have a repository to track changes on some public configuration files in the WMCH-Infrastructure.

Repository details:

Full name: wmch-infrastructure
Type: hosted git
Description: Public configuration files of some #wmch-infrastructure nodes.
Editable by: @valerio.bozzolan, @Ilario
Pushable by: @valerio.bozzolan, @Ilario

Partially related to this task, I will be interested in creating a couple of Phabricator bot users or something dummy, in order to send Differentials patches from the involved servers, from unprivileged users, and then accept their reviews. Anyway I cannot create a bot user. Do you have any (bureaucratic) tip?

Thank you!

Macro zoidberg-heckle: Where's the ballet?

Uhm. Looking at {E1121} it seems that who usually handled some of these similar requests is currently away and will stay there for three months at least.

Can I try to disturb @fgiunchedi, seen recently in some closed tasks in this workboard?

And well, if in the future you may want one more guy to handle these requests, you can count on my availability. I somehow know quite well Diffusion. Thanks again.

Thanks for reaching out @valerio.bozzolan! I'm not involved in Phab repository creation (assuming and inferring that's what you need here). I'm CC'ing @Aklapper that might be able to route you to the correct place/folks, thanks!

@valerio.bozzolan: Hi, see https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Gerrit/New_repositories/Requests for creating Gerrit repositories.
In my understanding (T191182) we'd like to avoid seeing more Diffusion/Differential repositories (and further hosting venue fragmentation).

Thank you,

I understand some of these concerns. For example, it's acceptable to do not promote GitHub while it has nothing to do with Wikimedia and can create technical (and political) confusion.

Instead, about avoiding Wikimedia Phabricator's Diffusion:

  • do you think it is right to apply that whole ongoing controversial discussion now and here?
  • can our common sense accept the phrase: "the majority used Gerrit and now everyone must use Gerrit"?

I do not think it is correct to change everyone else's workflow in the name of "new contributors perspective". The correct point of view here is that tomorrow a WMCH-Infrastructure newcomer should learn Gerrit, additionally to Phabricator... while before that discussion their work could be done with only Phabricator. Does this make sense?

I would be inclined not to apply that ongoing controversial discussion to current requests, having said that is something very interesting.

We have issued a request in Gerrit while it really seems that we can no longer request a Differential repository.

I will close this task when the repository will be granted.
