Add RfC link to "switching disabled" exception message
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

This task is about adding a link to the multi-line RfC within the mode switching exception messages that will have been implemented in T256150.

Rationale:

  • People who encounter the exception message are people who will likely use and benefit from this new syntax directly and be invested in the work being done to expand what they can use the Reply tool for

Event Timeline

I don't think we should have a direct link in the error message. At best it will just result in many "+1" comments, which are not particularly useful, and at worst someone will get upset that we're canvassing people.

Currently the message only links to https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:DiscussionTools/Reply_tool_visual_mode_limitations, and I think that's perfectly fine. We should only update that page with a link to the RFC when that's created. (Right now it links to T230683, maybe that's enough actually?)

This might be very theoretical, but if such a link was added in the DiscussionTools code repository (in contrast to e.g. WikimediaMessages) then any third-party MediaWiki installation with that extension and that extension's git revision will also display that RfC link for years to come (if software versions on that third-party wiki do not regularly get updated). Similar approaches have taken place in the past and I'd dare to call that a bad practice.

During today's meeting we agreed that the link will link to https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:DiscussionTools/Reply_tool_visual_mode_limitations. @ppelberg is going to update the link on that page to go to the RFC mediawiki page, which is https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/User:PPelberg_(WMF)/sandbox.

The above will happen as part of T246960 (see ===Done section).
