Unexplained abbreviations for time units in notices and alerts
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

Steps to reproduce

  1. Start screen reader software and navigate with the keyboard (not with the mouse).
  2. Log into a Wikimedia project such as Wikipedia or Wiktionary.
  3. Navigate to the "Alerts" or "Notices" links that appear after the link to your user page.
  4. Activate either of these links.
  5. Find and read the information about your alerts and notices.

What happens

The information includes abbreviations for time units. The page does not define these abbreviations. I did not expect to find abbreviations, especially abbreviations without definitions. The meaning of these abbreviations was not obvious to me. I took several days to work out what the abbreviations meant (after watching them change).

Expected behavior

I expected information to be clear. I expected more help for new users. I expected features for advanced users (like abbreviations) to be off by default.

Suggestions

  1. Do not use abbreviations by default.
  2. Explain the abbreviations.
  3. Do not use the abbreviations for screen reader users by default. (The abbreviations do not save screen space for screen reader users using speech output).

Third-party software

I tried this with the Mozilla Firefox web browser and the Orca screen reader.

Event Timeline

The information includes single-letter abbreviations for time units.

Not completely true, "mo" is used for month etc

Thank you for telling me that not all the abbreviations are single letters. Perhaps I will notice that as my alerts and notices grow older. I have updated the description to (I hope) avoid misleading people with my error. Please feel free to delete this comment. (I do not want to distract people with my unhelpful comments.)
