Enable client error logging on ca.wikipedia.org (Catalan)
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Enabling on Catalan Wikipedia for a modest bump in usage to give the Web team some more data to work with.

See T246030: Enable client side error logging in prod for small wiki for enablement on Hawaiian, and the associated patch for reference.

Event Timeline

jlinehan renamed this task from Enable client error logging on Catalan Wikipedia to Enable client error logging on ca.wikipedia.org (Catalan).Jul 15 2020, 4:11 PM
jlinehan updated the task description. (Show Details)
jlinehan added a subscriber: Ottomata.

Change 612893 had a related patch set uploaded (by Jason Linehan; owner: Jason Linehan):
[operations/mediawiki-config@master] Enable client error logging on ca.wikipedia.org, and disable on haw.wikipedia.org.

https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/612893

To add further support for leaving client-side error logging in place on Hawaiian Wikipedia (as discussed on the patch): the number of events coming from there is very low (actually 0 most days). Even if enabling on Catalan Wikipedia results in a surprisingly large increase in load on Logstash, disabling on Hawaiian Wikipedia would do little to offset it.

@Mholloway, @jlinehan, thank you for the prompt action! Would it be possible to add any of the Desktop Improvements Project test wikis? Here's where we're rolling out Vue.js search and DIP:

I can make a new task if that would help.

Yeh let's use a separate task for that. Olga also said she was going to consider reaching out to Catalan Wikipedia about being a test wiki.

Thanks for following up on this, yeah I was going to make a separate task for this because we will likely want to break this into two or more deployments due to some of these wikis being decently high traffic (Hebrew and French Wikipedia in particular). I'd like to examine the load from some of the smaller projects before opening things up more.

That said, I can enable some of these on this patch (and modify the task). If you create a separate task with the full list on it, I'll cross out the ones we catch with this patch and we can explore the rest on that ticket and go from there.

Okay we can follow up on that ticket then. We should be able to make those config changes same-day, the question is more about how many events we're going to see. I'll keep this patch to just be Catalan and we can follow up with the other patch and keep increasing the coverage until you have what you need or we hit a snag with capacity.

Thank you, @Jdlrobson. Blah, I think I had missed that. I've opened T258099 to track whichever approach makes sense.
