Make more clear that a (proximate) date of the picture is welcome
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

The current text is 'Wanneer is de foto genomen? (optioneel)'. This might suggest that we need a specific date.
Suggestion: 'Wanneer is de foto (ongeveer) genomen (optioneel, tekst of alleen een jaartal kan ook ingevoerd worden)'.
This might suggest people to give more information. It is better to know the picture was taken in 1965 of about 1907, than to have no information at all.

Event Timeline

People actually already do fill that in, but those dates are incorrectly converted to 01-01-1970 as the script can't make a proper date out of the values.
I've exported all filled in dates as entered by users to show they already do fill in whatever they want.

Thanks, two questions:

  • Is there a way to avoid the script and just transfer the dates as text to Commons?
  • Or is it better to simplify the date question and ask uploader to give only the year of picture taken? And to tranfer this to commons only if it consists of 4 figures?

I want to avoid more effort for uploaders to force them to select a date in a fixed format, we should keep it simple imho

I was already planning on doing 1

Good to hear you are going to change it.
And very good to hear input from the past is not lost, but simple not adequately transferred to Commons. For those interested, it will be possible to restore the missing data manually, and it might even be possible to have a look at re-exporting them.
